Factors Contributing to Pesticide Occurrence in Domestic Wells

It is often convenient to present the results of pesticide surveys in a tabular format for ease of comparison. Data presented in this format are often used by state and federal pesticide regulatory officials for distinguishing among regions having different rates of pesticide detection. Tabular presentation of data is also used by personnel from these agencies for making presentations at meetings, since the occurrence data can be shown in a concise format. Politicians and decision-making personnel from state and federal agencies use these tabular data for various planning and policy decision-making activities. Unfortunately, unless the underlying principles on which the pesticide survey was conducted are spelled out, data presented in this format can lead to misleading information and wrong policy decisions. The occurrence data depend on many complex and interacting factors, such as the design aspect of the survey; the hydrologic, geologic, and cultural factors that affect to the occurrence of these compounds in private wells; methods used for sample collection; sample analytical procedures; and hydrologic factors at the sampling locations.
