Chapter 3. Public Health Involvements and Impacts

While current activity (e.g., from the 1990s and on) is well documented, little literature was found that provides a historical account or context for the early years of involvement by physicians or public health groups, or connects past history to current activity (hereafter, for simplicity, the term public health will include doctors and the medical community). Articles by Donham and Mutel (1982) and Schenker (1996) are exceptions. The history of public health sector participation is one of documenting farm-related traumatic injury and occupational disease and illness, and bringing public pressure to bear on the problems and issues of farm work safety and health. This chapter will focus primarily on the documented record of public health sector involvement in the farm safety and health movement. Suggestions regarding a few problematic questions and issues raised in the course of this chapter are addressed more fully in later chapters. First, for readers less familiar with public healthâ€TMs approach to disease and injury prevention, a few brief comments about epidemiology and injury epidemiology are offered.
