This chapter describes how a particular approach to farm safety and health in the United States arose. This perspective comes from the "traditional agriculturalist" point of view. That is, it discusses farm safety and health as it became organized and grew into a national program as a result of efforts by persons and groups of people with first-hand knowledge and/or experience in farming. Although a previous history of farm safety and health has been developed (Murphy, 1992), this account focuses more on program development and the professionals who led the farm safety movement in its early years. This history is important as background and context for the chapters that follow.
