A Web-based DSS for Watershed Sediment and Erosion ControPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Paper number 022124, 2002 ASAE Annual Meeting . (doi: 10.13031/2013.11689) @2002Authors: Zhenxu Tang, B. A. Engel, J. Choi, K. Sullivan, M. Sharif Keywords: Decision Support System, DSS, WebGIS, Web-based, Sediment and Erosion Control Structure This study presents a web-based decision support system (SEDSPEC- Sediment and Erosion Control Planning, Design and SPECification Information and Guidance Tool) (http://pasture.ecn.purdue.edu/~sedspec) for predicting watershed peak runoff and designing sediment and erosion control measures. The system recommends hydrologic erosion and sediment control structures while planning conservation in a watershed. SEDSPEC system is comprised of model base, data base, and user interface, which are typical components for a model-based Decision Support System (DSS). It adopted two hydrologic models (the rational method and TR 55) to simulate short-term peak runoff based on site-specific hydrologic soil groups and land uses. Incorporating a precipitation database, the hydrologic models estimate peak runoff using design storms. The DSS integrates WebGIS technology to enable users to locate an area of interest, which is linked to a spatial database for land use and hydrologic soil group data. The web interfaces were developed to support communication between clients and the server system and display graphical output. As the final output, SEDSPEC calculates dimensions and cost of the sediment and erosion control structure selected based on users specifications, and provides maintenance information for it. A case study is provided to demonstrate the use and functionality of the SEDSPEC DSS. This system can be an efficient tool to facilitate decision-makers designing and planning procedures.
