Environmental streptococci have emerged as mastitis pathogens that uniquely affect mammary health as a primary cause of both subclinical and clinical mastitis. Exposure of uninfected glands to environmental streptococci occurs during milking, between milkings, during the dry period, and prior to parturition in first lactation heifers. Factors related to housing facilities and management practices that contribute to decreasing exposure of teats to environmental streptococci and increasing host resistance against infections are discussed. The proper design of housing facilities is central to the effective control of environmental streptococcal mastitis by reducing exposure to the pathogens.
