Size segregation induced by the percolation mechanism is pervasive in numerous industries such as agriculture, ceramic, chemical, food, pharmaceutical, and powdered metal. A redesigned, second generation primary segregation shear cell (PSSC-II) is being developed to simulate the size segregation occurring in two different poultry feed trough delivery systems (drag chain and auger). The critical parameters in the development of the PSSC-II include: powder bed depth, maximum powder bed strain, strain rate, and particle/granule size ratios. Based on these results, quantitative relationships between fine percolation rates and feed flowability, size ratio, as well as other PSSC-II parameters are being developed. In addition, the effect of size segregation during the delivery of feed to the birds on quality and quantity of egg production are being evaluated.
