The management of animal manures has become one of the most important issues for animal agriculture in the U.S. Therefore it is vital that the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), through the Land Grant System of institutions, be at the forefront of conducting research and disseminating the knowledge to producers and agencies involved with this topic. The Land Grant System of institutions is located in each state and territory.

This paper summarizes research (1997-2000) supported through CSREES federal funds and that supported cooperatively with other federal or state funds. This paper reflects the summaries of nearly 400 research projects classified by animal species (dairy, beef, poultry and swine) and category (animal mortalities, animal by-products, water quality, air quality, animal nutrition, land application, treatment/storage/collection, pathogens, social, and economics). Tables show the distribution of research funding by region, species, and category for each year. The funding directed towards animal manure management increased significantly from 1997 to 2000.
