Biomass Consumption in Local Parboiling ProcessesPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Paper number 026199, 2002 ASAE Annual Meeting . (doi: 10.13031/2013.10853) @2002Authors: Poritosh Roy, Naoto Shimizu, Toshinori Kimura Keywords: Biomass, local parboiling processes, parboiled rice and cost of parboiling A field study was conducted at Gazole under Malda district in West Bengal, India, to find the energy and the cost effective parboiling process, suitable and affordable for the rural poor people, engaged in the parboiling business. The biomass consumption and the quality indices of parboiled rice produced in the vessel, small and medium boilers were measured. Little difference in hardness, color and lightness values were observed. The parboiled rice produced in boiler methods has higher customer acceptance and market value than the vessel process. The medium boiler process was found to be energy effective and the small boiler was the cost effective one, requires higher initial investment. The cost analysis reveals that all the processes are economically viable and the small boiler was found to be the most attractive, having shortest payback period and highest internal rate of return. Adopting the boiler process, the local parboiling can be improved in terms of biomass consumption, would lead to energy conservation, helpful in reducing the environmental pollution and deforestation.
