During the transition process of agriculture after the political change in Slovakia, the number of farm animals, mostly cattle, decreased very rapidly. Old empty cattle barns are adapted for another type of farm animals. Some examples of reconstruction of 4 old cattle barns for swine housing are presented in this paper. They are reconstructed and modernised cattle barns for 1) lactating sows housed in loose straw bedded farrowing pens, 2) pregnant sows housed in group straw bedded pens with automatic feeding stations and dry sows in combined housing, 3) growing pigs housed in group straw bedded pens and 4) all categories of pigs housed together in one large formerly old cowshed. In all examples general rules of pig welfare, valid from last year in Slovakia, are respected. (Download PDF)    (Export to EndNotes)
