Reduced Sulfur Concentrations Near Southern Idaho Dairies

Odor had become a major concern at some of southern Idaho's dairies. Hydrogen sulfide and reduced sulfur have been linked to odors. Seven locations were chosen to sample for reduced sulfur (RS) during the end of summer and early fall 2001. There were eight dairies within five miles of the sample locations, including three large dairies and five small open lot dairies. Reduced sulfur was monitored using a Jerome meter, sampling twice daily for 15-minutes. Weather data including temperature, wind speed, wind direction, and relative humidity was collected during each sampling event. Reduced sulfur concentrations were highest near one of the large flush dairies. Of 154 sampling events near the large dairy, 21% were between 0.1 and 0.5 ppm and 4% were greater than 0.5 ppm. Reduced sulfur concentrations decreased dramatically with distance from the dairies.
