EVALUATION OF THE BLACK GLOBE AND HUMIDITY INDEX (BGHI) IN PROTOTYPES OF POULTRY FACILITIES WITH DIFFERENT SCALES AND COVERING MATERIALS, FOR BRAZILIAN WINTER CONDITIONS

Usually growing animals for food in Brazil is done in open facilities that have not thermal control. Once this country presents very hot summer and chilly winter at the most important production region, there is a need of knowledge and development of materials for the animals house covering, which promotes thermal comfort for them, both during summer and winter. The objective of this work was to evaluate the animals thermal comfort indexes by using small-scale models with different covering materials for poultry facilities, at winter conditions. Benefits are animals wellbeing and farmers best income. Twelve reduced models of poultry facilities scale 1:10, 1:8 and 1:6, covered with four types of materials were used. They presented the characteristics of the standard broiler facilities following an international standard and were laid equidistant, east west oriented. Used covers were: ceramic tiles, asbestos, aluminum and zinc with expanded polystyrene. Comparisons were made based on values of Black Globe and Humidity Index (BGHI), measured every two hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during ten days of identical sunshine period. It was concluded that, based on BGHI, ceramic tiles were the best covering materials for Brazilian winter conditions, and the 1:10 scale model most indicated for this kind of experiment.
