Ontologies can be used to better organize information resources. This paper discusses the application of ontologies within agriculture. A brief introduction to ontologies is given, along with a description of formal languages and tools for building ontologies. An international effort at building agricultural ontologies, the United Nations FAO Agricultural Ontology Service, is introduced. The possibilities for using ontologies to organize information resources within ASAE within the context of this wider project are also discussed. Finally, an example of a methodology for building an ontology is presented using the crop-pest domain.
