Solvent Extraction of Oil from Moringa (Moringa oleifera)Published by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Paper number 046057, 2004 ASAE Annual Meeting . (doi: 10.13031/2013.16940) @2004Authors: Sudhagar Mani, Jaya Sundaram, L. Narayanan Keywords: Vegetable oil, central composite rotatable design, solvents and optimization We report the extraction of seed kernel oil from moringa (Moringa oleifera) with hexane, petroleum ether and acetone as the first extraction medium. Hexane yielded maximum percent oil. After optimization of particle size (0.62 mm), extraction temperature (56.5oC) and residence time (7 h) maximum extraction of oil was 33.5%. This protocol provides improved opportunities for the medicinal use of moringa in addition to its popularity as a vegetable in south Asia. (Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
