The Future of Farming?

Published by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org

Citation:  Resource Magazine. 19(4): 18-20. (doi: 10.13031/2013.41658) @2012
Authors:   Charles Merfield
Keywords:   farming history, future, sustainability, fertilizer, pesticides

Editor’s note: As noted with the previous feature, the January/February 2011 issue of Resource was dedicated to “The Farm of the Future.” Charles Merfield’s contribution was different from most—more philosophical, looking at deeper issues and longer time scales, and like John Schueller’s, it brought many reader comments. This article expands on ideas that Merfield touched on previously. It explores why modern agriculture is unsustainable and why farming must proceed down a different road.
