Farmer Friendly Automatic Gate SystemPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: 2008 Providence, Rhode Island, June 29 – July 2, 2008 084216.Authors: Luke A Petersen, Rhonda Miller Keywords: Disability, Gate, Automatic, AgrAbility Traversing livestock gates is an issue that has long perplexed farmers and ranchers. Even a well hung gate can become a frustrating barrier to mobility and productivity on the farm. These mobility concerns are further amplified among farmers with disabling conditions that may partially or completely inhibit their ability to operate gates, thus becoming a serious impediment to employment. The need exists for a simple, low-cost, and durable gate operating system that can be retrofitted to existing gates in areas of the farm without access to electricity. Three different prototypes were tested on the farm for durability and functionality. As a result of field testing, a vehicle-actuated automatic gate operating system has been developed that is: operated without exiting the vehicle, built with common tools and locally available materials, retrofitted to an existing gate, and affordable. |
