Augmented Reality Systems Applied to Poultry Grading and Inspection

Previous research in the Food Processing Technology Division of the Georgia Tech Research Institute has developed a machine-vision automated inspection system to inspect food products as they pass by on a processing line. This automated inspection system has been extensively tested in the poultry industry, and appears to work well. If this automated inspection system is to be accepted by poultry processors and the USDA for safety inspection, the inspection results must be relayed from the system to a human, who will discard or trim the product as necessary. This paper describes two “augmented reality” communication systems that are being developed to convey the results of the automated inspection system to the human trimmer. A planned experiment to evaluate these concepts is also described.
