The Hydrologic Simulation Program – Fortran (HSPF) model requires calibration with observed data in order to perform simulations in a reliable fashion. This paper will explore the advantages and disadvantages of two public domain software packages – HSPEXP and PEST – that can be used to assist with hydrologic calibration of the HSPF model. The comparison will discuss the user interfaces, available tutorials, documentation, model feedback and guidance, calibration criteria, and other resources that enable the user to quickly and efficiently employ these calibration aids. The calibrated parameters and output obtained by using the two different calibration aids will also be presented for the Mossy Creek and Long Glade Creek watersheds in Virginia.
