A Watershed Information System (WIS) has been developed that contains a set of stand-alone, geographic information system (GIS)-based tools for the analysis and visualization of watershed data including water quality, stream flow, land use, and other watershed based data sets. The WIS software is designed to provide users with the ability to analyze existing data in order to make decisions in watershed management and in the development of TMDLs. The WIS is based on a set of mapping tools developed at Utah State University and has the ability to support and display a variety of spatial data types, including terrain; point, line, and polygon features; as well as imagery. The WIS is also customizable to any watershed with readily available sources of data and information.

The WIS includes both water quality and stream flow data display and analyst components. These two components provide a wide range of statistical analyses, as well as the ability to plot and visualize available data using a variety of common plot types. Data are accessed by either clicking on a sampling location on the map or by using a list of existing sampling locations. Functionality is included for examining seasonal trends in data, exceedence of water quality standards, spatial and temporal availability of data, as well as many other analyses that are important in watershed management decision making.
