REDUCE ODOR EMISSION FROM SWINE BUILDINGS USING ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER

A preliminary study was conducted to determine if carbon filters may be useful for reducuing odors from swine buildings. A activated carbon filter was developed and tested at the University of Illinois swine research farm. The VBH-2000H Activated Carbon Filter Housing was used as a filtering material. The dimensions of the filters are 60 cm (24 in) wide, 30 cm (12 in) high as flow cross section, and 62 cm (24.5) in length along the flow direction. The specially designed plywood chamber consists of two sections: a prefilter section to remove the dust, and the carbon filter and the sampling section. The chamber was airtight and connected with a booster fan. Dirty and dusty air was drawn from inside of the swine building after passing through the wall exhaust fan. The barn exhaust air entered the chamber via a 25cm (10in) diameter flexible duct. Throughout the experiment, the exhaust fan delivered a ventilation rate of about 1360 m3/h (800 cfm) for the carbon filter. The preliminary test showed that the activated carbon filter reduced 26.2 % of odor emissions from a swine building. (Download PDF)    (Export to EndNotes)
