Biosecurity in swine facilities is of vital concern to the US swine industry. The engineering aspects of building facilities necessary to implement biosecurity equipment and protocols are presented. The paper summarizes research that affects the spacing of buildings, the use of sanitation procedures and equipment, and other design decisions. Incorporating the design suggestions presented should make it feasible and cost effective to incorporate a wide variety of biosecurity measures in a swine production complex.
