BIOLOGICAL NUTRIENT REMOVAL FOR SWINE WASTEWATER

A system including units of anoxic, anaerobic and aerobic has been developed in this study to remove nutrients for swine wastewater. Three tests at different organic loading rates were conducted to evaluate the treatment efficiency for this system.

Both anoxic and anaerobic units were controlled at 37±1 °C, while the aerobic unit was controlled at 30±1 °C. The influent COD was prepared at a concentration about 5,000 mg/L. Three different sets of tests at system HRT of 5.75 d, 3.83 d and 2.875 d were operated to evaluate the performance of the whole system and each individual unit. Changes of water quality including solids, organic material, nitrogen and phosphate were observed during the whole experiment.

Experimental results showed that all three tests had significant effect in removing both COD and nutrients for swine wastewater. The removal efficiencies of COD, total nitrogen and total phosphate were achieved in the ranges of 92 - 98%, 42 - 93% and 62 - 88%, respectively.
